Fat Girl is a heartbreaking film that fills you with disappointment, disgust, and disbelief, and even though the film is in both English and French, the emotions feel universal. It reminded me a lot of Welcome to the Dollhouse because of the way it captures those confusing and uncomfortable moments of being a young girl trying to understand the world around you. The film is very well made and does a good job showing adolescence without glamorizing or glorifying childhood innocence, instead showing how cruel, dull, and emotionally damaging the world can really be. What makes the film so disturbing is how honest it feels about innocence being taken away too early and how important it is to preserve it before it’s gone.

View allAnaïs is twelve and bears the weight of the world on her shoulders. She watches her older sister, Elena, whom she both loves and hates. Elena is fifteen and devilishly beautiful. Neither more futile, nor more stupid than her younger sister, she cannot understand that she is merely an object of desire. And, as such, she can only be taken. Or had. Indeed, this is the subject: a girl's loss of virginity. And, that summer, it opens a door to tragedy.
