We Were Liars

It's not a bad series, but in my opinion, it didn't really need to be a series. Everything could have been told in a movie. Sure, some details would have had to be cut, but I feel like the suspense could have been handled much better. That being said, I genuinely did not see that plot twist coming. I never suspected anything. Instead, I thought she had ended up that way because they had covered up a murder, which is pretty ironic. When she suggested the fire, I did think about the dogs, but I assumed it was one of those details that gets glossed over in a script, so I figured the dogs were with the kids. But when I heard the barking, I swear I got scared. I think that was absolutely horrifying and incredibly sad. I can't really blame Candace, since everyone else agreed to the whole plan too, but that doesn't make the scene any less unsettling to watch. And that was only the first plot twist. When she mentioned that they had died too, I was like, PUFFFFF, that hurt. I didn't particularly connect with the characters or anything, but I knew the context, and that made the whole thing feel so much heavier. In the end, it's kind of like the beginning: obviously, being rich, they weren't going to let someone with their last name go down. In a way, it doesn't really matter that they gave her a choice, because it still wasn't fair. It may not have been entirely their fault, but I still don't think it was fair. The series was very slow, especially considering it only had eight episodes. Maybe the second season will focus more on the mothers' summer, which could explain some of their behavior. I don't know if I'll watch the second season when it comes out. I still think the story could have been less slow-paced, but that doesn't make it a bad series. I think it's important for teenagers to see stories like this-stories that show how a young mind, full of ambition and wanting so many things, can sometimes forget to look at the bigger picture. That's probably the biggest lesson I'm taking away from the series.
