Nicholas reveals his true plans, for Adam to be the first of a new race, with him as its leader. Adam confronts Barnabas with proof that he is holding Victoria captive, and demands a mate once again.

Jeff realises the truth about Adam and confronts Barnabas and Julia about the experiment. Despite their denials, he remains unconvinced. Barnabas appeals to Stokes to intervene with Adam to save Victoria.

After speaking with Stokes, Adam struggles with his conscience and asks Nicholas to release Victoria. Nicholas convinces Adam that Stokes cannot be trusted. Barnabas and Julia agree to Adam's demands.

Victoria is released, but with her memory of her ordeal removed. Nicholas pays Maggie a visit, as his affection for her continues to grow. To cement his relationship, Nicholas orders Angélique to attack Joe.

A reluctant Willie is enlisted to assist Barnabas and Julia's experiment. When Joe pays Nicholas a visit, he discovers Angélique, who claims to be a prisoner. Drawing closer, she advances with her fangs bared.

Julia sets up a laboratory in the Old House basement. Barnabas is suspicious of Joe's withdrawn behaviour. Willie goes graverobbing and is caught in the act, as Joe follows Angélique's supernatural summons.

Angélique calls Joe to her, after which Nicholas gives him a job to do. Joe confronts Barnabas over Willie's activities. As Tom begins to recover from his coma, Nicholas fears that his work will be exposed.

Maggie pays the newly awakened Tom a visit in hospital. Joe's erratic behavior causes Maggie concern, which Nicholas is happy to exploit. As Tom sleeps, Angélique enters his room to deliver a fatal attack.

Fearful that Tom will rise as a vampire, Barnabas makes plans to stake him. After a close encounter with Joe, Barnabas and Willie succeed in exhuming Tom's coffin, but are shocked to discover that it is empty.

Jeff suspects Barnabas knows the truth about Victoria's disappearance and discovers Lang's journal while investigating. As Julia works in the Old House laboratory, Tom corners her, baring his fangs.

Julia's attack affects her behavior drastically and she tries to dismiss plans to continue with the experiment. Recognizing her symptoms, Barnabas pulls away her scarf to reveal the tell-tale neck wounds.

Adam demands that his mate will be with him in a month, or everyone at Collinwood will die. Breaking into the Old House, Jeff discovers Julia's handiwork for the experiment... and Barnabas lurking in the shadows.

Jeff confronts Barnabas about the threat Adam poses to Victoria. A worried Roger learns that Elizabeth has escaped from the asylum. Barnabas persuades Julia to act as bait in a plan to deal with Tom.

In a trancelike state, Elizabeth wanders back to Collinwood, where the family tend to her. When Julia is left to watch her, a summons from Tom sends her into the night, followed by a confused Elizabeth.

Elizabeth confides in Barnabas that she fears being buried alive. Barnabas arrives at the crypt and narrowly saves Julia from Tom. With Tom's hideaway discovered, Barnabas returns, intent on defeating him.

As Tom lies prone during the day, Barnabas stakes his enemy. Elizabeth demands that Roger and Barnabas return to the scene, where they discover the coffin has gone. Roger fears for Elizabeth's mental state.

Maggie struggles to break through to Joe, who begs her to guard him. However, when Angélique puts his resolve to the test, he forcefully leaves. While Nicholas is away, Julia and Barnabas search his house.

Barnabas takes Joe back to the cottage, where he begs for Maggie to prevent him from leaving again. Nicholas arranges for Angélique to summon Joe, allowing him to comfort a distressed Maggie.

Maggie and Joe's relationship worsens as he becomes more unhinged. Nicholas discovers from Willie that the experiment used Barnabas as the life force for Adam, unknowingly overheard by Angélique.

Angélique plans on being the life force for the experiment, despite Nicholas' misgivings. Stokes intervenes when Adam and Jeff come to blows. Jeff is bitten by Angélique, as part of her latest scheme.

Angélique tells Jeff her plan to be the life force. A preoccupation with the experiment costs Jeff a new job. Elizabeth is tormented by a dream of her funeral, with her paralyzed in a coffin, unable to call for help.

Convinced that death is near, Elizabeth calls Tony to arrange changes to her will. A jealous Adam is devastated when he spies Carolyn kissing Tony. Enraged, Adam viciously attacks Tony.

Roger expresses concern over Elizabeth's funeral requests, and learns that she plans to exclude the family from her will if they do not comply. After being locked up by Harry, Adam breaks out and takes flight.

Jeff's secret agenda is almost uncovered when Julia catches him looking through her notes. As Victoria's patience with Jeff's erratic behavior wears thin, she breaks off their engagement and gives back the ring
