This is what I call prime HBO television!
Not because of the satellite battle that leveled Rushville, the assault on Macon Ranch, or the ring's functions becoming more prominent, but because this episode showed us the ring's true power. Destiny. Are you destined to have this great power & responsibility?
After last week’s episode left Hal delivering John to death’s door, this episode showed us that 1. Under Hal’s bravado & nihilism, there's a man who NEEDS this ring, or else he’ll have nothing & 2. He’s succumbing to the influence of Sinestro’s teachings of weeding out the threat of replacement.
And when John eventually walks away from a life that was “given” to him because he hasn't found any joy or reason to take the mantle of Green Lantern, his destiny is changed & even though he will eventually take the mantle, he will have a lot of self-discovery to do.
Overall, I really enjoyed this episode because now we’re getting into the meat & bones of the show & even though this show is described as a sci-fi version of “True Detective”, I also feel a little bit of a Taylor Sheridan influence. Sadly, there are only three episodes left, but that's where the real mystery begins.
