A film that knows what it is and doesn’t try to be anything more and that’s what works for it.
Ethan Hawke is mesmerizing as Lorenz Hart a man forced to come to grips with the reality that despite his beautiful words, no one is listening to him any more. The film acts as both an ars poetica and the tragic downfall of a once highly-respected artist. The story is simple, the characters are few, the dialogue and performances are what really drive the film.
Tremendous performances from all the actors involved but I can’t help but feel as though the story is a little messy and unfinished.
A lot sadder than I expected but all the more authentic for it.
Surprising twist. Amanda Seyfried slays as she always does. Pleasant surprise.
I don’t care if they are kids and his parents didn’t love him… **_Fuck Jack!_**
The film boasts a remarkably strong cast and they all committed, the problem is a meandering story that feels like it was written by several different screenwriters and pieced together. That being said I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as people are making it out to be. It’s hardly the worst movie I’ve seen this year.
Nothing original about the plot but Emily Bader and Tom Blythe’s charm and charisma make up for it.
It actually enrages me that this film took a great concept, a strong cast, and masterful performances by Ray Nicholson and Alba Baptista; and proceeds to make the most lifeless, hollow version possible.
